![]() A Touring Exhibition with a Vision The European touring exhibition 'Ending Homelessness' is a campaign to raise awareness in a strikingly different way. By exhibiting life-size sculptures of homeless men and women, the Casa Ioana Association wants to make the lives and living conditions of homeless people visible.
The thirteen bronze sculptures, commissioned by the Danish NGO Projekt UDENFOR and created by the Danish artist Mr. Jens Galschiøt, reflect the uniqueness of each homeless person and gives an insight into that individual’s life. The statues portray men and women, young and old, and include people with mental health problems and others with alcohol or drug abuse.
The sculptures arrived in Bucharest on Monday 14 March 2011 and will be exhibited throughout March 2011. The Casa Ioana Association is grateful to the following organisations for their support, particularly in accepting to each host some of the exhibition’s sculptures. Members of the public can see the sculptures in four locations throughout Bucharest: • The British Council - 14, Calea Dorobantilor, Sector 1 • The National Theatre - 2, Bd. Nicolae Balcescu, Sector 1 • Unirii Metro station 2 • Local Authority for Sector 2, 11-13, Str. Chiristigiilor (in the park in front of the building) EQUASS Accreditation.![]() The Casa Ioana Association was a national partner of the European Platform for Rehabilitation’s PROMETHEUS project which tried to address the need for a European approach on quality in the social services sector. The project's objectives revolved around the questions of definition, measurement, assessment and improvement of quality of social services. Casa Ioana was involved in developing the processes, procedures and instruments for self-evaluation, measuring quality and tested an implementation strategy regarding services for homeless people.
Following a two-day external audit, Casa Ioana was awarded an EQUASS Assurance in Social Services at an award ceremony in Brussels on 17 November 2010. The project did highlight some difficulties in implementing an all-embracing quality framework because of the broad and diverse nature of social services, particularly in regards to emergency homeless services.
Romanian Oscar for Excellence![]() On 11 October 2010 our President, Ian Tilling was awarded a Romanian Oscar for Excellence for his 20 years humanitarian work in Romania. The award was more surprising because it is intended for Romanian citizens. Ian dedicated the award to the staff and beneficiaries of Casa Ioana for supporting his vision and making it their own. Written Declaration![]() A written declaration on an EU homeless strategy was registered on 6 September 2010. The Casa Ioana Association welcomes this initiative and hopes that the required number of signatures will be gathered by the lapse date, which is 6 December 2010. We are calling on all our members of the European Parliament to support this important initiative.
Key objectives of the Campaign at national and European level • A clear movement away from managing homelessness to ending it .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................. Casa Ioana is Bucharest’s leading charity for homeless families. Our services run day and night, every day of the year to help homeless people have the opportunities to improve their quality of life. We support homeless people in their journey back inside from social exclusion by opening the door to safe temporary housing and a wide range of support services. Casa Ioana provides more help for homeless people in gaining life skills than any other charity – from getting back to work through to independent living skills. Preventing homelessness is also very important to us. Our temporary accommodation provides safe accommodation for 90 vulnerable people and our staff-team has worked with thousands of people at risk – including the vast majority who have lived on the street. The range and quality of services provided by our ACASĂ Programme are unique, as are the needs of those we exist to assist. “In all my experience, I have never yet met a homeless person who has told me that he or she has adopted this way of life. I have met many though, who have told me that they have no opportunities to change and have adapted to living on the streets.” Ian Tilling, M.B.E. – President of Casa Ioana
